2. What HGH is?
Growth hormone (GH), also known as somatotropin (or as human growth hormone [hGH or HGH] in its human form), is a peptide hormone that stimulates growth, cell reproduction, and cell regeneration in humans and other animals. It is thus important in human development. It is a type of mitogen which is specific only to certain kinds of cells. Growth hormone is a 191-amino acid, single-chain polypeptide that is synthesized, stored, and secreted by somatotropic cells within the lateral wings of the anterior pituitary gland.
GH is a stress hormone that raises the concentration of glucose and free fatty acids.It also stimulates production of IGF-1.
A recombinant form of hGH called somatropin (INN) is used as a prescription drug to treat children's growth disorders and adult growth hormone deficiency. In the United States, it is only available legally from pharmacies, by prescription from a doctor. In recent years in the United States, some doctors have started to prescribe growth hormone in GH-deficient older patients (but not on healthy people) to increase vitality. While legal, the efficacy and safety of this use for HGH has not been tested in a clinical trial. At this time, HGH is still considered a very complex hormone, and many of its functions are still unknown.
3. How does HGH work in your body ?
In its role as an anabolic agent, HGH has been used by competitors in sports since at least 1982, and has been banned by the IOC and NCAA. Traditional urine analysis does not detect doping with HGH, so the ban was unenforceable until the early 2000s, when blood tests that could distinguish between natural and artificial HGH were starting to be developed. Blood tests conducted by WADA at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece targeted primarily HGH. Use of the drug for performance enhancement is not currently approved by the FDA.
GH has been studied for use in raising livestock more efficiently in industrial agriculture and several efforts have been made to obtain governmental approval to use GH in livestock production. These uses have been controversial. In the United States, the only FDA-approved use of GH for livestock is the use of a cow-specific form of GH called bovine somatotropin for increasing milk production in dairy cows.
The names somatotropin (STH) or somatotropic hormone refer to the growth hormone produced naturally in animals and extracted from carcasses. Hormone extracted from human cadavers is abbreviated hGH. The main growth hormone produced by recombinant DNA technology has the approved generic name somatropin (INN) and the brand name Humatrope, and is properly abbreviated rhGH in the scientific literature. Since its introduction in 1992 Humatrope has been a banned sports doping agent, and in this context is referred to as HGH. Another recombinant drug, somatrem (INN), is almost identical to endogenous hGH and somatropin, except for one terminal amino acid residue.
4. Where is HGH from ?
Genes for human growth hormone, known as growth hormone 1 (somatotropin) and growth hormone 2, are localized in the q22-24 region of chromosome 17 and are closely related to human chorionic somatomammotropin (also known as placental lactogen) genes. GH, human chorionic somatomammotropin, and prolactin belong to a group of homologous hormones with growth-promoting and lactogenic activity.
The major isoform of the human growth hormone is a protein of 191 amino acids and a molecular weight of 22,124 daltons. The structure includes four helices necessary for functional interaction with the GH receptor. It appears that, in structure, GH is evolutionarily homologous to prolactin and chorionic somatomammotropin. Despite marked structural similarities between growth hormone from different species, only human and Old World monkey growth hormones have significant effects on the human growth hormone receptor.
Several molecular isoforms of GH exist in the pituitary gland and are released to blood. In particular, a variant of approximately 20 kDa originated by an alternative splicing is present in a rather constant 1:9 ratio, while recently an additional variant of ~ 23-24 kDa has also been reported in post-exercise states at higher proportions. This variant has not been identified, but it has been suggested to coincide with a 22 kDa glycosylated variant of 23 kDa identified in the pituitary gland. Furthermore, these variants circulate partially bound to a protein (growth hormone-binding protein, GHBP), which is the truncated part of the growth hormone receptor, and an acid-labile subunit (ALS).
Since the first use of HGH by bodybuilders, it’s remained an anabolic with plenty of conflicting ideas and opinions associated with it. Perhaps that’s because there is still so much mystery surrounding it.
Bodybuilders in the quest to achieve greatness – large, ripped muscles, that dry look characteristic of a top bodybuilder’s physique. Since the 1950s, competitors have used many different supplements both pharmaceutical and natural based.
The 1960s was an unprecedented time for anabolic steroids and extreme muscle growth. Bodybuilders that were competing were fully aware that they had found what they needed to take their physic to a whole new level.
By the time the 1970s had arrived there was an entirely different level of sporting success occurring. By then lucrative contracts a complete careers had arrived based solely on one’s athletic abilities. By now anabolic steroids, while still used, had lost their shock and awe, and bodybuilders and athletes alike had turned their attention to GH or growth hormone.
Growth hormone is natural to the well being of every human and it is produced by the pituitary gland. It is needed in certain amounts for the numerous physiological processes to occur within the body. The body controls the release of GH so as to optimize the body’s functions. However whenever there is too much HGH or too little HGH production it can result in serious health issues.
When excessive GH is present as is seen in those that have the condition Acromegaly, it leads to tissue overgrowth, muscle weakness and insulin resistance.
Childhood GH secreting tumors can result in the excessive production of GH that leads to Pituitary Gigantism. Andre the Giant is a good example of Pituitary Gigantism. At the age of 12, he stood 6’ 3” and as an adult, he stood 7’ 4”. This condition eventually killed Andre the Giant.
There can also be medical concern when there is not enough GH produced, which in children can cause children to not grow properly. While rare GHD can also occur in adults leading to a decrease in muscle mass, energy, and overall quality of life.
Whether there is an overproduction or underproduction of HGH both groups require careful monitoring. When there is an underproduction of HGH supplementation can restore Somatropin levels to normal levels with the return of lean muscle, bone density, reduction of fat, improved cardiovascular health and improved mental health.
Bodybuilders are a smart bunch and it didn’t take them too long to realize that when HGH was added to the drug cocktail they were already taking to build big muscles they could enjoy even more muscle development along with faster injury recovery. Until then GH had been a pretty much unknown anabolic agent, but not anymore. Those participating in bodybuilding competitions in the 1970s and 1980s presented with a more refined, clearly chiseled muscle development that was far more sculpted than what had been seen previously. Soon GH was a mainstay among the most serious bodybuilders around the world.
It certainly did attract a great deal of attention along with its fair share of criticism. There were those that that felt using it was okay while there were others that were strongly against it. There were those that also felt that it offered very little benefit. However, those bodybuilders that were using it knew just how effective HGH actually was. There is no question that GH has certainly had its share of opinions that conflicted and that it was certainly surrounded in mystery. It can all be a bit confusing.
With the widespread use of HGH among the sporting elite, many athletes are fully aware of the benefits. After all, they’ve seen the benefits of human growth hormone in athletes from a number of sports including bodybuilding. Shortened recovery time after injury, increased lean body mass, and a superior ability to burn fat.
When it comes to pro bodybuilders all of them are using Somatropin, especially in the current environment where it is far easier to get than it was back in the 90s. It is not essential to take during contest prep or off season like some think and that’s it’s really more about the right amount at the right time.
Bodybuilding Benefits of Growth Hormone
There is a lot of misinformation floating around out there, about just what the gains are when it comes to taking GH. Contrary to what you might have heard, you will not add 50 percent gains if you use HGH; it’s more like a 15 percent gain. When you add GH to your cycle you’ll be lucky if you are even genetically gifted enough to enjoy that 15 percent gain. GH is not a magic bullet that’s going to give you success as a bodybuilder. You already need to be a successful bodybuilder to enjoy the 15 percent benefit. Many might find that disappointing to discover.
HGH isn’t a miracle but bodybuilders who use the optimal dosage can see the benefits. Great, so what’s the optimal dosage? That’s where the confusion comes in. For some bodybuilders 8 IU or less is optimal while for others 24 IU is optimal. Then again, for others 24 IU leads to water retention and bloating with no benefit.
Most experts agree that generally taking 4 IU a day for 50 days is more efficient and beneficial than taking 8 IU a day for 25 days if bodybuilders want to get the full benefit. Consistency along with the correct timing is what’s critical. Many bodybuilders will tell you that GH and anabolic steroids used in conjunction offer the greatest benefits.
GH has a half-life of 15-20 minutes after intravenous or sub-q injection. After that time, the blood concentrations of GH peak 1-3 hours after the injection. Past that, there is no anabolic effect.
There are plenty of theories floating around about the best way for HGH to be administered but unless one has a thorough understanding of the production of GH in the body and its interaction with other hormones within the body it would be difficult to determine the best strategy.
Experts agree the best time to inject HGH is when insulin is low, post workout, with the administering of insulin 30-40 min later. Many bodybuilders, especially those elite competitors choose to use GH twice daily. The one optimal time I post workout while the other is before bed as this is also when insulin levels are low. The only better time to take GH would be to wake up in the middle of the night and take it then.
There can be serious problems if anabolic steroids are overused with some of the effects worse than others. This isn’t a problem with HGH. There’s no need for any detox post cycle because there is no toxicity to the body if it is legitimate GH.
There are different ways HGH can be taken and there may be some debate over what the most effective way. In sports intramuscular is believed to be the best way as it will reach the system faster than through sub-q injection and therefore start to act sooner.
The size and weight of the user does not change the determining factor for side effects. Rather the liver’s capacity to use the HGH that can determine whether side effects are experienced. The two most common side effects are that it can cause, Gynecomastia, Acromegaly, HGH Gut, Carpal Tunnel, nose growth and jaw growth. While it has not been proven to cause cancer, GH can make cancer worse because of the anabolic effect it has on cell growth.
It’s important to know that while HGH can help with that rock hard definition and muscle size it is not a miracle substance and it is not nearly as effective as steroids are at adding muscle mass. When it comes to its effectiveness there’s plenty of debate over whether the use of growth hormone is good or bad. From a health standpoint, GH isn’t as dangerous as some of the steroids that are used. Unlike some of these other steroids, diuretics and insulin where there have been deaths, there have been no deaths attributed to GH use as far as we know. Whether it’s worth the use, will have to be a personal decision.
